Established in June 1984, the Graduate School of Jilin University is one of the first 22 graduate schools approved by the State Council to embark upon a trial graduate program at key universities. In March 1996, Jilin University Graduate School was officially approved by the former National Education Commission to come into formal operation.     The training of graduates at JiLin University started quite early and can be traced back to 1949when the university began to offer graduate courses. In 1952, a 3-year graduate program was initiated and later in 1978, JLU graduate school started to confer degrees to graduate students.       In October 1985, Jilin University became one of the first universities approved by the State Council to start post-doctoral programs.     According to the decision made by the State Council concerning the structural adjustment and administration reform of high education and under the approval of the Education Ministry, 5 universities, namely, Jilin University, Jilin University of Technology, Norman Bethune University of Medical Science, Changchun University of Science and Technology and Changchun Post and Telecommunication Institute, respectively administered by the Education Ministry, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Land and Resources and Ministry of Information Industry, merged into the new Jilin University on June 12th, 2000. In 2004, the former University of Military Logistics was amalgamated into Jilin University. Currently Jilin University covers 13 academic disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, literature, education, history, science, engineering, medicine, agronomy, art, management and military science, among which there are 4 first-level national key disciplines (covering 17 second-level disciplines), 15 second-level national key programs and 4 national prospective key disciplines. Now there are 44 first-level doctorate degree programs, 59 first-level master degree programs and 37 research centers for post-doctoral studies in Jilin University.  27 members of the Chinese Academy of Science and of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (17 members of both Academies), 20 members of the Discipline Assessment Group of State Council Academic Degree Committee, and over 1,213 doctoral advisors are currently working in Jilin University. The number of registered graduate students has hit 24,000. Professor Chen Gang, the deputy president and doctoral supervisor assumes the office of the Dean of the Graduate School. Professor Han Xiping serves as the Executive Vice Dean. Professor Tian Wenjing,Yu Ping serves as the Vice Dean. Division of Academic Degree, Division of Academic Affairs , Division of Graduate Administration and Office of General Affairs are also established.   Jilin University has always been attaching great importance to the quality of postgraduate education; a series of measures, therefore, have been adopted concerning the supervision of application, the design and renovation of curriculum, the conferment of degrees, the perfection of guidelines and regulations and the education of moral principles to gradates, etc. The Graduate School has reformed degree and education programs, such as the introduction of a continuous academic project that involves undergraduate and postgraduate study, and a continuous academic project that involves postgraduate and doctoral study. Masters equipped with both professional knowledge and pragmatic skills in application fields are also educated here to cater to the demand of enterprises and businesses. Currently such pragmatic postgraduate disciplines conferring master’s and doctoral degrees cover a wide range from finance, international business, insurance, valuation, law, social service, education, Chinese language education, applied psychology, art, translation and interpreting, journalism and communication, cultural relic and museum to engineering, agriculture promotion, public health, nursing, Pharmaceutical Science, MBA, MPA, accounting, books and intelligence, engineering administration, clinical medicine, odontology, and veterinary medicine. Presently the Graduate School of Jilin University covers the widest range of academic disciplines and has become a top-standard postgraduate education base in China.
